Laduree: With the downfall of the monarchy, many delicacies that had exclusively reserved for the nobility now became available to the masses. Champagne, patisseries, chocolate and other delicacies started popping up in restaurants and boutiques all over the city. However the pleasure remained the terrain of men as it was illegal for a woman to sit by herself in a terrace café! Frequenters of the famous brasserie Procope even complained of the lack of women to meet in the restaurant. It was hardly an atmosphere to incite romantic encounter. Jeanne Souchard, wife of the famous baker Ernest Laduree, suggested to her husband that they open a tea salon. The year was 1891 and their former bakery had recently burnt down. Women could frequent tea salons without being accompanied by a man. She must have known that where women could be found unaccompanied… men would surely follow. The tea salons were decorated in a cozy dim lit ambiance. They became legendary as a place to meet and be seen over a cup of hot chocolate, believed to be an aphrodisiac for women at the time.

tour reviews

We took a gourmet food tour in Paris with Aurore. She was delightful. Her extensive knowledge of the neighborhoods, markets and individual specialty shops is amazing. We tasted the most delicious things and learned about the food, history and culture in the process. Definitely one of the highlights of our week in Paris!

The cheese tasting with Virginie was magnificent! She went to so much trouble: the table was perfectly decorated and her cheeses were sublime! We couldn’t have asked for a more welcoming and charming hostess!

We want to thank you for working with us to find a time agreeable to us and your organization for the wine tour. Charlotte took us to places we never would have gone to on our own. The lady singing opera in the first bar and the "three pieces of cheese" in the fourth bar were highlights along with the wonderful companionship of Charlotte. We have laughed over the cheese; Charlotte was embarrassed but of course it had nothing to do with her. We will certainly recommend you to friends who may be traveling your way in the Fall. And of course we will be in touch on our next trip over. Peggy
