Burgundy vs Bordeaux Tasting Selections

Tasting Options:

Bordeaux : Red: St Emilion, Pomerol, Graves Pessac Leognan, Pauillac, St Estéphe, Margaux  / White: St Julien, Moulis  Burgundy: Red: Pommard, Gevrey Chamberti, Beaune, Santenay, Aloxe Corton, Nuits St George / White: Meursault, Puligny

What makes the region of Burgundy unique in its wines ? Unlike Bordeaux, the great Burgundies both red and white, are un-blended wines made from a single grape variety, Pinot Noir for the red wines and Chardonnay for the white wines, whose aromes and tastes vary depending on the soil from which they are grown. This is perhaps why the battle cry of Burgundy is TERROIR !Terroir is a French word without a direct English translation. It is applied to specific vineyards (and more recently food) sites. Roughly translated, it means the combination of soil, climate, aspect to the sun and geography which believers maintain is a fundamental, defining influence on a finished wine.

The idea of terroir was first recognized by the monks when they noticed that wine from certain parts of the vineyard was better than others. They began to divide up the land according to aspect, soil, orientation etc. Terroir was born ! Many of the demarcations set up by the monks still exist today, including the land parcels for Grand Cru wine in Chablis and Clos de Vougeot.

Loire Wines

Tasting Options:

Sauvignon Blanc: Deux Tours, Comte Lafond, Ladoucette, Comte Lafond Grande Cuvée
Chenin Blanc: Brédif Brut Extrême, Brédif Brut, Vouvray, Nectar 2005

The Loire Valley wines are light, fresh and relatively low in alcohol. White wines predominate, based on the Chenin Blanc, Muscadet and Sauvignon Blanc grapes, from the Muscadet of the Nantais area, perfect with shellfish, to fine Vouvrays and Sancerres further east. (One of the oldest wineries in the Loire Valley is Chateau Moncontour which overlooks the village of Vouvray. The 13th century estate surrounds the castle which dates from the 15th century).
